October 26, 2009
CNN
By Jomana Karadsheh, Mohammed Jamjoom, and Mohammed Tawfeeq
The death toll from twin car bombings in Baghdad climbed to 160, with hundreds more wounded in the deadliest attack in the capital in more than two years, the Interior Ministry said Monday.
At least 540 people were wounded in Sunday's attacks.
One of the bombs exploded outside Baghdad's governorate building, the other outside the justice ministry. The bombs detonated in quick succession about 10:30 a.m., officials said.

Gun Control By Way Of Health Reform
October 22, 2009
Investors.com
According to data from the Census Bureau, 65.7% of the U.S. population lives in the 39 right-to-carry states, and there is no indication that such laws have turned our neighborhoods into the O.K. Corral.
To the contrary, all the stats we've seen show a steep decline in murders and violent crimes after a state adopts a right-to-carry law.
Dr. Glen Otero of the Claremont Institute reports that where U.S. counties have enacted conceal-carry laws, murder rates have fallen by 8%, rape by 5% and aggravated assault by 7%, with the highest declines in urban counties.

Get a conscience, not a costume
October 24, 209
CNN Opinion
By Rudy Ruiz, Special to CNN
This is always a frightful time of year, but this year it got a bit scarier.
You may have been prematurely spooked by an "illegal alien" costume threatening Halloween thrill seekers with an extraterrestrial countenance, orange prison garb and a green card. There's also a version with a baseball cap and droopy moustache.
Frankly, I'm surprised the manufacturer, Forum Novelties, is not offering other stereotypical accessories, like low-rider flying saucers and glow-in-the-dark lawn mowers.

China is probably hacking and spying on US, report finds
The Northrop Grumman report links hacker attacks on US to China
October 23, 2009
Techworld
By Robert McMillan
Looking to gain the upper hand in any future cyber conflicts, China is probably spying on US companies and government, according to a report commissioned by a Congressional advisory panel monitoring the security implications of trade with China.
The report outlines the state of China's hacking and cyber warfare capabilities, concluding that "China is likely using its maturing computer network exploitation capability to support intelligence collection against the US government and industry by conducting a long term, sophisticated computer network exploitation campaign." In other words, evidence suggests the Chinese government is using hacking techniques to steal US government and industry secrets.

It's Official: The ATF and the FBI Don't Get Along
October 24, 2009
Time
By Theo Emery
In April 2005, sheriff's deputies reached a suburban Seattle home in time to prevent a firebomb from detonating. But there was nothing the sheriff's department could do to defuse another volatile situation at the site: a feud between the explosives teams that showed up from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The attempted arson was the apparent handiwork of the Earth Liberation Front, a designated a domestic terrorism group. But trouble at the scene emerged when FBI and ATF explosives experts seemed to believe their own agencies should head the investigation, recalled Sgt. John Urquhart, a spokesman for the King County sheriff's office. "It was clear that there was something going on. There was tension between the groups of ATF agents and FBI agents," Urquhart told.

Bill Aims to Improve Concealed Weapons Permitting for Retired Officers October 24, 2009
Officer.com
Congressman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) has announced legislation to improve current law to permit qualified retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms. The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act Improvements Act of 2009, H.R. 3752, aims to increase public safety and ensure proper protection for law enforcement officers.
"About five percent of law enforcement officers who die each year are killed while taking action in an off-duty capacity. Convicted criminals often have exact memories, preventing law enforcement officers from ever being 'off duty', whether active duty or retired," said Forbes in a prepared statement.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation
Insight Tech Gear H/W-X120
In the ever evolving world of hand-held and weapon-mounted flashlights the competition keeps driving lights to higher and greater performance. When the LED-driven lights were engineered to produce enough light to be "tactical" things got better. LEDs are harder to break (and we're good at breaking things). When versatile functionality was designed in through digital switching or programmable tailcaps, things improved again. LONG gone are the days of simply turning your flashlight on and off. This week I'm reporting on the tests I've performed on the HX120 and the WX120 from Insight Tech Gear.

Recreational Review:
VIEVU PVR-PRO2 Wearable VideoCam
A short decade ago, wearable video cameras were more bulky than was convenient; levels of necessary light were high; picture quality was less than.... Well, it sucked. Wiring everything on and hoping it stayed in place was a pain. The things you wanted to video tape yourself in the process of were often the kinds of things that would jar loose the video camera from its careful mountings. Thank goodness for evolution in technology. Enter the VIEVU PVR-PRO2 wearable video camera. About the size of the first pager I ever wore, this thing is convenient, pretty tough and VERY easy to use.

RAND
By Palar K and Sturm R; Factsheet by David M. Adamson
Overconsumption of sodium is a persistent problem in the United States. It leads to high blood pressure and contributes to related illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends that adults consume no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium each day, with lower amounts recommended for groups at higher risk of developing high blood pressure. It seems intuitively clear that reducing sodium intake would improve Americans' health and reduce medical costs; yet, to date, the potential benefits have not been quantified. To address this gap, RAND researchers used a simulation model to estimate the effects of reducing average sodium consumption, across the adult U.S. population, on
- the prevalence of hypertension
- the direct medical costs of treating high blood pressure
- quality of life.
The model incorporated information about adult Americans' blood pressure levels, use of antihypertensive medications, and sodium intake from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a federal study that assesses Americans' health and nutritional status. Results showed the following:
