Readers;

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of early breast cancer detection. This disease hits close to home as one of our own is bravely fighting this battle. We can all make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. It can be as simple as encouraging regular screening tests for loved ones and friends or by participating in an event designed to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. Regardless of how you chose to participate, please participate. Every little bit helps support the goal of ending this terrible disease.

We are participating in the 2009 Komen Tidewater Race for the Cure 5K in Virginia Beach on October 17. If you live in the area, please come out and show your support.

I am patting myself on the back as I extend a Happy Birthday to the US Navy BEFORE their birthday tomorrow. (Regular readers know that I have a habit of forgetting important dates!) Tomorrow marks the 234th birthday of the United States Navy. Thank you to the fine men and women who serve in the US Navy and in all branches of our military.

Stay safe.

A Dogged Taliban Chief Rebounds, Vexing U.S.
October 10, 2009
The New York Times International Harold Tribune
By Scott Shane

WASHINGTON - In late 2001, Mullah Muhammad Omar's prospects seemed utterly bleak. The ill-educated, one-eyed leader of the Taliban had fled on a motorbike after his fighters were swiftly routed by the Americans invading Afghanistan.

Much of the world celebrated his ouster, and Afghans cheered the return of girls' education, music and ordinary pleasures outlawed by the grim fundamentalist government.

Q+A-Is it the Nobel "Peace" or "Political" prize?
October 9, 2009
Reuters
By Patricia Zengerle

WASHINGTON, Oct 9 (Reuters) - The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday to President Barack Obama, the third prominent U.S. Democrat to win recently, only seemed to reinforce an impression the prize can be as much about politics as about peace.

Some observers interpreted the Nobel less than nine months into Obama's presidency, before he had had time to pursue much peace policy, as a last dagger from Europe tossed at Obama's Republican predecessor, former President George W. Bush, who was unpopular there.

In U.S., Record-Low Support for Stricter Gun Laws
October
Gallup
By Jeffrey M. Jones

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup finds a new low of 44% of Americans saying the laws covering firearm sales should be made more strict. That is down 5 points in the last year and 34 points from the high of 78% recorded the first time the question was asked, in 1990.

Today, Americans are as likely to say the laws governing gun sales should be kept as they are now (43%) as to say they should be made more strict. Until this year, Gallup had always found a significantly higher percentage advocating stricter laws. At the same time, 12% of Americans believe the laws should be less strict, which is low in an absolute sense but ties the highest Gallup has measured for this response.

Sailors take aim at new recruiting slogan
October 11, 2009
Military Times
By Philip Ewing

The Navy's new recruiting slogan, "America's Navy: A global force for good," was designed from the outset to motivate existing sailors as much as to entice young people to enlist.

But according to reactions by Navy Times readers in the week since the slogan was made public, that plan isn't working.

Tip of the Week:

Carbine Optics & Iron Sights

Many carbine shooters have come to rely solely upon a red-dot type sight such as an Aimpoint or Eotech as their only sighting system on their gun.

As the adage goes, "one is none", absolutely holds true here in this situation.

While deployed on active duty in the military, I took some guys from my unit to the range to check the zero on their weapons and conduct some sustainment training. One person asked why I had iron sights mounted on my M4 since I also ran an Aimpoint. I told him in the event that ol' Murphy decided to stop by and my optic were to fail (battery die, mount knocked loose, lens break, or any other numerous things that always seem to happen when you most need your optic to work) I would still be able to switch to my iron sights.

Just so happened that his optic failed during our range evolution and he did not have back up iron sights to switch to.

Shooters need to become proficient with their iron sights, then work with the optic. The optic will add speed of shots by allowing you to focus on your target and superimposing the dot on it. With iron sights, you have three distinct distances to align with your eye (rear aperture, front sight and the target), the front sight being the most important element of all. The iron sights should be in a condition that permits them to be utilized immediately should your optic fail. They should be co-witnessed with the optic (able to use them directly through your optic).

Be safe and have fun!

DHS Needs Better Web Security Management Practices, OIG Report Says
October 9, 2009
Security Management
By Matthew Harwood

A newly released report from the Department of Homeland Security's internal watchdog says that the department and its member agencies' public-facing Web sites are vulnerable to attack that could leave them open to defacement, service interruption, and resource loss.

The 21-page, highly redacted report from DHS' Office of the Inspector General (OIG) evaluated the nine most popular of the department's 125 public-facing Web sites and discovered that while the component agencies responsible for the Web sites followed DHS policies when setting them up, they left too much to chance afterward.

How Have Deployments During the War on Terrorism Affected Reenlistment?
October 6, 2009
RAND
By James Hosek, Francisco Martorell

The military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have placed considerable strain on service members, particularly those in the Army and Marine Corps. This research responds to widespread concern about the ability of the services to maintain required force levels under these circumstances. The research reviews deployment trends, develops a theoretical model, and analyzes both survey and administrative data. Survey data findings show that deployment increased both work and personal stress and reduced the intention to reenlist as reported at the time of the survey, but it had little effect on subsequent reenlistment. Administrative data showed how the effect of deployment varied by year and differed between first- and second-term reenlistment for each branch of service. The effect of deployment on reenlistment was positive or near zero in most years but became negative for the Army in 2006 and 2007. Analysis traced the negative effect to those soldiers with the highest cumulative months of deployment, whereas soldiers with few months of deployment had a positive effect. Findings for the Marine Corps were similar, but with shorter deployments, fewer Marines accumulated high cumulative months of deployment. The research also considered the roles of deployment pay and reenlistment bonuses in supporting overall reenlistment, which was especially important for the Army, in which the effect of deployment became negative.

In 2008 Afghanistan firefight, US weapons failed
October 11, 2009
Stars and Stripes
By Richard Lardner Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It was chaos during the early morning assault last year on a remote U.S. outpost in Afghanistan and Staff Sgt. Erich Phillips' M4 carbine had quit firing as militant forces surrounded the base. The machine gun he grabbed after tossing the rifle aside didn't work either.

When the battle in the small village of Wanat ended, nine U.S. soldiers lay dead and 27 more were wounded. A detailed study of the attack by a military historian found that weapons failed repeatedly at a "critical moment" during the firefight on July 13, 2008, putting the outnumbered American troops at risk of being overrun by nearly 200 insurgents.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation

GD Itronix MR1

First off you need to understand: I'm not a technology kind of guy. Sure, I like electrical toys that serve my purposes like flashlights and radios, but I couldn't tell you the strengths or weaknesses of particular radio designs or how the digital switching in some flashlights work. For all that, I've done some previous testing of laptops and was approached by General Dynamics Itronix to test their new MR1 "laptop". When I got the test unit I was more than surprised. I look at it as sort of a Blackberry on steroids.

DSM Products Safety Banners

A few months ago I was approached by a number of people specifically wanting advice on what they should do if they were out in public, legally carrying a firearm, and present when an "active shooter" event took place. Their actual actions and the morality / values that drove them were never in much debate. OF COURSE they were going to do all they could to protect their families and neutralize the shooter. The bigger challenge was how to identify themselves safely to responding law enforcement. Enter DSM Products Safety banners.

Real men do wear pink. Especially when supporting a cause as important as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Calling their campaign A Crucial Catch, NFL players and coaches are sporting pink on everything from helmets, to towels, to shoes, to the palms of their gloves. And it doesn't stop there. Referees are wearing pink wristbands, and fields and stadiums are adorned in pink as well.
