Readers;

I goofed last week and need to extend my apologies to Chaplain Staton. The title of his article should have been "WHAT CAN COME AFTER - WHAT WE HAVE SEEN AND EXPERIENCED” not "THE CONTRACT - THE OATH OF OFFICE WHAT WE HAVE SEEN AND EXPERIENCED." We deeply appreciate the input and guidance that Chaplain Staton provides each week and regret this error.

We had another busy week in the news. We honored our promise to "Never Forget 9/11. Representative Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" to President Obama. There was encouraging news regarding the swine flu vaccine from the National Institutes of Health. Apple debuted a new iPod Touch. And the Pittsburgh Steelers won their opening game. GO Steelers!

Stay safe.

Bin Laden reportedly calls Obama 'powerless'
September 14, 2009
AP News
MAAMOUN YOUSSEF

Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden described President Barack Obama as "powerless" to stop the war in Afghanistan, and Americans' inability to grasp why the Sept. 11 attacks occurred has "cost you a lot without any result whatsoever."

The remarks by the terrorist leader were released two days after the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that he ordered. Bin Laden typically addresses the American people in a message timed around the Sept. 11 anniversary.

U.S. to Expand Detainee Review in Afghan Prison
September 12, 2009
New York Times
Eric Schmitt

The Obama administration soon plans to issue new guidelines aimed at giving the hundreds of prisoners at an American detention center in Afghanistan significantly more ability to challenge their custody, Pentagon officials and detainee advocates say.

The new Pentagon guidelines would assign a United States military official to each of the roughly 600 detainees at the American-run prison at the Bagram Air Base north of Kabul. These officials would not be lawyers but could for the first time gather witnesses and evidence, including classified material, on behalf of the detainees to challenge their detention in proceedings before a military-appointed review board.

Sales of firearms in the United States have skyrocketed since November 4, 2008. It's no secret the election of Barrack Obama to the highest office in the free world caused grave concern among gun owners.

Liberals scoff at the notion that Obama would attempt to disarm the United States population. However, this is the man who can be heard in an address to a group in San Francisco on a clandestine recording say, in reference to rural America, "...they cling to their guns and their religion."

Tip of the Week:

Dry practice tips.

Dry practice is an important training aspect that is frequently neglected but is a means of maximizing your time at the range. It also provides an inexpensive method of working on problem areas in your shooting.
The first aspect to dry practice is safety. First, clear the weapon or weapons you intend to practice with and remove all ammunition from the room. Check not just the weapon but any and all magazines you intend to use to verify there is no live ammunition. Some shooters dedicate magazines for dry practice and go as far as painting the magazines so they are not used for anything else. After you check all magazines, weapons and equipment, check again! Sometimes rounds fall out of the magazines and into the pouches. This can create a hazardous situation.
Choose a wall that faces in a safe direction. It is preferred that the wall you point the weapon at be made of a material that will stop a round if there is an accident. Using personal body armor as a backstop is another good alternative.
Dedicate about 10 to 20 minutes to dry practice about three times a week. Make sure that you are undisturbed for the duration of the session. If for some reason you have to leave the room or become distracted, you must recheck all mags, weapons and pouches before resuming your session.
Work on one or two aspects of training during the session. Work on proper trigger press and presentation from the holster. You may work only on empty gun reloads. Whatever training evolution you choose, ensure that you concentrate on executing the drill properly and smoothly. If you start to losing concentration or become sloppy in your presentation, STOP. As much as you can train properly, you can develop a bad habit from improper repetitions as well. Avoid using a mirror to practice with (you have a tendency to focus on the mirror rather than the front sight).
Be sure that you work on techniques that are more difficult to you. It's easy to focus on things that we are good at, but learning harder skill sets make us better overall shooters. (IE; practice drawing and pressing the trigger one handed or shooting with your support hand). If you're not sure how to execute a particular drill, find out from a trusted professional before you practice an improper and possibly dangerous technique.
Whatever you practice dry, be sure to vet it at the range. You'll notice that your skills will increase while maximizing time at the range.

Terror Underground: Eight Years After 9/11, New York Subways Vulnerable to Attack, Experts Say
September 11, 2009
ABC News
Brian Ross, Vic Walter and Megan Chuchmach

Despite hundreds of millions of dollars allocated to create a state-of-the-art surveillance system for New York City's subway system, the monitoring technology is still not in place and experts say the city's underground transportation tunnels remain a leading and unnecessarily vulnerable target to terrorism eight years after the 9/11 attacks devastated the country.

"Terrorists, if they did surveillance, would know that security hasn't really improved since 9/11," said former national security officer Richard Clarke, now an ABC News consultant.

Terms of Engagement

Chester A. Crocker

PRESIDENT OBAMA will have a hard time achieving his foreign policy goals until he masters some key terms and better manages the expectations they convey. Given the furor that will surround the news of America’s readiness to hold talks with Iran, he could start with "engagement" - one of the trickiest terms in the policy lexicon.

The Obama administration has used this term to contrast its approach with its predecessor's resistance to talking with adversaries and troublemakers. His critics show that they misunderstand the concept of engagement when they ridicule it as making nice with nasty or hostile regimes.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation

Efilmgroups' Active Shooter / Rapid Response Training DVD

In the past ten to fifteen years we have seen an unprecedented spike in "active shooter" events. They have occurred in schools, malls, business buildings, churches and more. With the on-going threat of terrorist attacks, the same methodology may be used to attack an entire city as we saw in Mumbai, India. It is imperative that law enforcement professionals in every state and territory - and indeed, anywhere we have a military outpost in the world with a civilian population - understand the proper tactics and techniques to respond to such attacks / events. This training DVD, Active Shooter / Rapid Response from efilmgroup is an excellent resource to be part of such training.

Recreational Equipment Review

Revision Eyewear Photochromic Hellfly

It's not uncommon today to see law enforcement professionals from the average patrol officer to the most highly skilled SWAT cop wearing eye protection. Said eye protection can take the form of the cheapest bulkiest (and ugliest) "goggles" you can find in any convenience store. Luckily for us, they can also take the form of high-speed stream-lined high-performance eyewear produced for our military. Thankfully, such eyewear has as much application in the field for recreational purposes as it does for military or law enforcement work. In this week's review we're going to take a look at the new photochromic Hellfly sunglasses from Revision Military Eyewear. These sunglasses are highly serviceable for hunting, fishing, hiking, etc - where we sometimes completely neglect our eye protection.

THE CONFLICT OF PEACE KEEPING...

"The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Eat less, exercise more. Now there is new evidence to support adding another "must" to the weight-loss mantra: eat at the right time of day.

A Northwestern University study has found that eating at irregular times -- the equivalent of the middle of the night for humans, when the body wants to sleep -- influences weight gain. The regulation of energy by the body's circadian rhythms may play a significant role. The study is the first causal evidence linking meal timing and increased weight gain.

"Taking a break from work for even a few minutes can help you feel better and increase your energy level," said Kara Smith, special programs coordinator for the Loyola Center for Fitness.
