Readers;

Last Friday was Employee Appreciation Day here at the USTC Compound. Our employees are an integral part of our business running smoothly and efficiently and this time was set aside to say "thank you for all that you do." I personally want to thank all of our essential personnel who could not attend. You are not forgotten and thank you for your dedication and hard work

It's back to business as usual here in Moyock. We are "Training today to meet the challenges of tomorrow!"

Somali insurgents reject Ramadan ceasefire call
August 24, 2009

Mohamed Ahmed

Somali insurgents on Sunday rejected a government call for a ceasefire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and accused the president of trying to use religion as a cover for re-arming his troops.

President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, a former Islamist rebel, had called for an end to fighting during Ramadan to allow people to pray. [ID:nLM409364]

"We will not accept that ceasefire call. This holy month will be a triumphant time for mujahideen and we will fight the enemy," Hizbul Islam leader Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys told a news conference.

U.S. Military Says Its Force in Afghanistan Is Insufficient
August 24, 2009
New York Times
Helene Cooper

American military commanders with the NATO mission in Afghanistan told President Obama's chief envoy to the region this weekend that they did not have enough troops to do their job, pushed past their limit by Taliban rebels who operate across borders.

The commanders emphasized problems in southern Afghanistan, where Taliban insurgents continue to bombard towns and villages with rockets despite a new influx of American troops, and in eastern Afghanistan, where the father-and-son-led Haqqani network of militants has become the main source of attacks against American troops and their Afghan allies.

Scotland lawmakers to meet on Lockerbie Release

BEN McCONVILLE

Scottish legislators gathered Monday for an emergency meeting on the government's decision to release the Lockerbie bomber as critics claimed the act could severely damage relations with the United States.

The government of First Minister Alex Salmond has faced unrelenting criticism from the both the U.S. government and the families of American bombing victims for freeing Abdel Baset al-Megrahi.

The Libyan - the only man convicted of killing 270 people in the 1988 airline bombing -was released last week on compassionate grounds because he is terminally ill with prostate cancer. He has returned to his native Libya.

RIP, or Rather, R.I.P. The U.S. Constitution T-Shirt Creates Waves
August 22, 2009
Snafu-ed Blogspot

A photo of a young woman, Ashleigh Kenny, standing next to Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA) while he holds a t-Shirt is making the rounds, and making waves. The photo shows a t-shirt that says "R.I.P. The U.S. Constitution" on the front.

The back of the t-shirt, not visible in the photo, is emblazoned with a quote from Ronald Reagan: "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem." Ashleigh Kenny presented the t-shirt to Kingston at a health care reform town hall on August 3rd.

Former Agency Heads Defend Use of Intelligence Contractors
August 21, 2009
Security Management

Speaking at the National Press Club at an event on privatization of Intelligence, former CIA director Michael Hayden and former Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff defended the use of contractors as a means of filling in skill sets that might be lacking in-house.

"We viewed contractors as an integral part of our work force," said Hayden, and he decried the current attitude that contractors are by definition bad and in-house employees are good.

Foolproof Forensics? The Jury Is Still Out
August 24, 2009
NPR
Ari Shaprio

The world of forensic science has been in turmoil for the last six months since a prestigious panel released a study raising serious questions about many forensic techniques from hair analysis to fingerprints.

Those techniques have collectively resulted in thousands of people landing in prison - and now groups within the forensic science community are fighting over what the next steps should be.

Physicist Thomas Bohan says scientists knew for years that many forensic techniques "lacked scientific evaluation," but there was no political will to do anything about it. Now the report by the National Academy of Sciences offers "an opening, an opportunity," Bohan says.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation

TREXPO East 2009

I am lucky that part of my job is to attend some trade shows, find out what's new or different, and pass that along. This week, TREXPO East was held in Chantilly, Virginia and there were a few interesting pieces of equipment on display or being introduced. The list of them is below with a touch of info about each - and you can look forward to future full reports on how the products actually held up after testing.

LED Handhelds for Camping

Unless you've been lucky enough not to buy a flashlight in the past five years or if you just aren't into "new fangled" equipment, you're aware of the LED revolution in lighting tools. Some of them are compact and bright enough to make them excellent for recreational outdoor purposes, even when that "recreational outdoor" purpose is dealing with the drunk moron who wandered into your campsite to caus a ruckus.
