US Slams Afghan Warlord's Return
August 17, 2009
Associated Press
KABUL -- A powerful and controversial Afghan warlord returned from exile in Turkey late Sunday - in an apparent attempt by President Hamid Karzai to attract ethnic Uzbek voters in this week's presidential election.
The U.S. immediately condemned Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum's return and raised concerns about his alleged involvement in "massive human rights violations."

North Korea to Reopen Its Border to the South
August 16, 2009
New York Times
Mark McDonald
HONG KONG - North Korea said Monday that it would open its highly militarized border with South Korea to allow periodic family reunions and group visits by tourists from the South.
The conciliatory move, coming just after the high-profile releases of two American journalists and a South Korean worker detained by the North, seemed likely to ease the growing anxiety on the Korean peninsula.

40 Percent of Top DoD Appointments Unfilled
14 Aug 2009
Defense News
JOHN T. BENNETT
Seven months into the Obama administration, key senior U.S. Defense Department jobs remain vacant even as the Pentagon reshapes its strategic focus and molds the 2011 spending plan.
Of 47 Pentagon posts that require Senate confirmation, eight are filled by holdovers appointed by former President George W. Bush. The Obama administration has filled an additional 20. That leaves 19 vacant positions scattered across the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the three military departments.

Living and Fighting Alongside Men, and Fitting In

STEVEN LEE MYERS
FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARHORSE, Iraq - There is no mistaking that this dusty, gravel-strewn camp northeast of Baghdad is anything other than a combat outpost in a still-hostile land. And there is no mistaking that women in uniform have had a transformative effect on it.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation
efusjon Energy Drinks
Bear in mind as you read this that I'm not a fan of energy drinks. When a friend handed me a Red Bull at a conference I took one sip and gagged. They just simply aren't my taste. So when I got the box with some efusjon drinks in it I was skeptical at best. My oldest son tried two before I would try one. I still can't say I'd rather have any energy drink over a coca-cola, but at least now I've found one I like and can recommend.

Recreational Equipment Review
"The Officer's Guide to Police Pistolcraft" by Michael Conti
Courtesy of POSA & Ralph Mroz
A couple years ago, Mike Conti published a book titled Police Pistolcraft. That book was a both a description of the "New Paradigm" police training that Mike and his staff had developed for the Massachusetts State Police, and a description of why it was developed and structured as it was. That book was geared not so much at the actual techniques of the system that Mike had developed (although they were covered significantly), but more at the instructor-level background on how our minds and bodies work under the kind of stress that police encounter when they need to use their firearms, and how a police-relevant system of instruction should and could be structured.

SEEING
Some look and see only what they want to see... Some very few look and see in minute detail all that is there to see. Most people fall into a group on the low side of seeing... Seeing little or maybe more than little, but not seeing a lot of what is there.

An upstanding new sport
Water-based activity builds upper body
August 11, 2009
News-Press.com
Dayna Harpster
No, it's not a new Wii game. It's a real water sport.
And if you ask local aficionados, it's a really pleasant way to work your upper body, including your arms and your body's core, which gives it stability.
Although Michael Vernon of Fort Myers has been paddleboarding only about four months, he finds time about every other day to throw a board in the water.
