Readers;

You may notice the first article is an opinion piece by Hugh Hewitt at the Washington Examiner. I am lucky enough to have seen "The Stoning of Soraya M". It is a powerful story that will bring some type of emotion... For all who think talking will make change, please see this movie.

Break

Last week I inserted a several year old article I have done this before when the subject was relevant but will admit to blowing it this time. Probably had something to do with age but I am not admitting that piece.

Stay safe.

See 'The Stoning of Soraya M' and send the Mullahs a message

"How can we support the demonstrators in Iran?"

When Americans see tragedy at home or abroad, the immediate response of millions of them it to want to help. Thus the outpouring of private relief efforts after the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the surge of volunteers and donations into New Orleans after Katrina in August-September, 2005, and the outpouring of support for the rural poor of China after the devastating earthquake of May, 2008.

There are other examples too numerous to mention, and every day sees groups of Americans doing good works around the globe.

Now, as the theocratic fascists of Iran strike back at the protestors in Tehran and around the country, the pictures and videos from Twitter and other social media show mayhem, murder and great suffering.

Americans are again asking "How can I help?" In this case, though, the government wants exactly the opposite of help for the suffering. The regime wants to increase the pain of the people, not alleviate it. Khamenei and Ahmadinejad want to punish, imprison and eventually execute those who call on the West for help.

Since open contact with a dissident can bring the Basij to the dissident's door, what's an ordinary American to do?

Go see the movie "The Stoning of Soraya M" when it opens this week in cities across the United States. Buy tickets for your friends. Sell out every screening, and then when the film appears in more cities the following week, go again to a different theater.

Honduran military ousts president ahead of vote

Soldiers seized the national palace and flew President Manuel Zelaya into exile Sunday, hours before a disputed constitutional referendum. Zelaya, a leftist ally of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, said he was victim of a coup.

Hours later, Congress voted to accept what it said was Zelaya's letter of resignation, but Zelaya said the letter wasn't his and vowed to remain in power.

In Context: US Military Spending Versus Rest of the World

When the US Fiscal Year 2009 budget request for military spending came out in early 2008, Travis Sharp and Christopher Hellman (mentioned earlier) projected the spending of other nations planned for 2008 thus allowing comparison between US military spending and the rest of the world:

SPECIAL PREVIEW: The Abandonment of Democracy

The most surprising thing about the first half-year of Barack Obama's presidency, at least in the realm of foreign policy, has been its indifference to the issues of human rights and democracy. No administration has ever made these its primary, much less its exclusive, goals overseas. But ever since Jimmy Carter spoke about human rights in his 1977 inaugural address and created a new infrastructure to give bureaucratic meaning to his words, the advancement of human rights has been one of the consistent objectives of America's diplomats and an occasional one of its soldiers.

This tradition has been ruptured by the Obama administration. The new president signaled his intent on the eve of his inauguration, when he told editors of the Washington Post that democracy was less important than "freedom from want and freedom from fear. If people aren't secure, if people are starving, then elections may or may not address those issues, but they are not a perfect overlay."

Global Military Domination

Since the US-led intervention in Iraq, a lot has been written about American intentions to make use of its massive military superiority, resulting from the end of the Cold War, to somehow dominate the world. Anyone can see that American military spending exceeds that of other countries right now, in absolute dollar terms; the United States spends as much on military related expenditures as the rest of the top ten spenders combined. This is only one comparative measure of military power of course. But by any meaningful measure, American military power today stands as second to none.

Does Imported Oil Threaten U.S. National Security?

Abstract

The major risk to the United States posed by reliance on oil is the economic costs of a disruption in global oil supplies. RAND researchers found no evidence that oil exporters have been able to use embargoes to achieve key foreign policy goals to stop terrorist groups that depend on oil revenues to launch attacks. The U.S. government would reduce the costs to U.S. national security of importing oil by supporting well-functioning oil markets and imposing an excise tax on oil.

A Social Infrastructure for Hometown Security: Advancing the Homeland Security Paradigm

'The nation's homeland security strategy calls on federal, state, and local governments, businesses, communities, and individuals across the country to work together to achieve a shared vision of a secure way of life. Yet for over seven years, through attacks, threats, and disasters, the core ingredient in efforts to achieve that goal remains elusive. 2 The American public has been left out and is largely missing in action.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation

Miscellaneous Ammo Review

Every so often I get a sample of ammunition – usually less-lethal but sometimes just a specialty munition – that doesn't warrant a full review on its own. This week's review is going to cover two such samples that I received: first is the Lightfield Nova-DR 12g distraction round. Second is the Extreme Shock handgun cartridge that I received in loadings for .380ACP, 9mm and .45ACP. Let's start off with the 12g distraction rounds and then move into the handgun stuff.

"The Apostle" by Brad Thor

Yes, yes... another book. Don't complain too loud because Brad Thor writes some of the best action-adventure counter-terrorism books on the market today. In "The Apostle" Brad's main character, Scot Harvath finds himself being asked for a favor by the President of the United States – a president who had most recently done away with Scot's job and left him unemployed. Now, with "special circumstances" putting pressure on the president, he asks Scot to act without official sanction (nothing new there) to rescue a doctor kidnapped by the Taliban. Such a challenge is right up Scot's alley and he dives in energetically.
