Blackwater Tactical Weekly
Readers;
Another great day at the United States Training Center and the summer days are here. There are hundreds of students each day working without a complaint. As most of them say, "we are on the best ranges in the world, we have the best instructors and we get to shoot all day, what can we complain about?"
The experience of a trip to USTC is something that should not be missed, if you get the chance you should get here as soon as you can. If your unit wants to train here, give the sales office a call. The training is listed on the GSA schedule and we have multiple contract platforms for our military customers.
Stay safe.

The Evolving Terrorist Threat to Southeast Asia
Terrorism is not new to Southeast Asia. For much of the Cold War, the activities of a variety of domestic ethnonationalist and religious militant groups posed a significant challenge to the region's internal stability. Since the 1990s, however, the residual challenge posed by substate militant extremism has risen in reaction to both the force of modernization pursued by many Southeast Asian governments and the political influence of radical Islam. Building on prior RAND research analyzing the underlying motives, drivers, and capabilities of the principal extremist groups that have resorted to terrorist violence in the Philippines, southern Thailand, and Indonesia, this study examined the historical roots of militancy in these countries to provide context for assessing the degree to which local agendas are either being subsumed within a broader ideological framework or shaped by other extremist movements.

Target Iran: American Options
During the course of the last year revelations of a potential Iranian nuclear weapons program combined with increasingly belligerent rhetoric emanating from Iran has caused alarm in the international community and no more so than in the United States. As the Bush administration weighs its response to the possibility of the revolutionary Islamic Republic armed with nuclear weapons, perhaps it might be instructive to consider what options actually exist. There is a range of options available. Published discussions have suggested everything from diplomacy to sanctions to air strikes to a limited ground war to a regime changing war on Iran. Even the use of tactical nuclear weapons has not been discounted.

Afghan firefight shows challenge for US troops
Missiles, machine guns and strafing runs from fighter jets destroyed much of a Taliban compound, but the insurgents had a final surprise for a pair of U.S. Marines who pushed into the smoldering building just before nightfall.
As the two men walked up an alley, the Taliban opened fire from less than 15 yards, sending bullets and tracer fire crackling inches past them. They fled under covering fire from their comrades, who hurled grenades at the enemy position before sprinting to their armored vehicles.

The Only Way To Prevent Genocide
Have you ever found yourself in the position of asking, on your own behalf or on behalf of others, how many or precisely which people it would be useful to kill in order to secure a benefit for yourself or your cause? And just how to do it? No? Others have. Their answers have ranged from Cain’s original "Abel, with my bare hands" to Hitler's "all the Jews, mainly by gas," and the widespread Hutu view in the Rwanda of 1994, "the Tutsis, with machetes." The question burns today for the government of Sudan and in the Congo.

Global Metropolitan Policing: An Emerging Trend in Intelligence Sharing
The emergence of transnational criminal actors challenges national law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Global criminals are involved in traditional organized crime activities, e.g., theft, smuggling, and dealing in all types of contraband. These criminal networks, however, also engage in activities that can fuel domestic and international conflicts, potentially creating threats that can undermine state actors and existing security regimes. The tensions created by what amounts to the “darker side” of globalization challenge existing mechanisms of cooperation among various national police organizations.
The purpose of this article is to explore how transnational criminal networks are creating incentives to change traditional police operations and to describe how law enforcement officers can better coordinate their activities as they adapt to contain and eliminate global criminal threats.

Domestic Terrorist Groups
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines domestic terrorism as terrorism involving groups based in, and operating entirely within, the United States and its territories, without foreign direction. The FBI further divides domestic terrorism into three basic categories: right-wing, left-wing, and special-interest terrorism. Terrorist organizations in the United States had their beginnings with the foundation of the Ku Klux Klan in 1866. White racist movements remain major contributors to terrorism, but the toll of terrorist activities has also included socialist, anarchist, and minority nationalist groups, as well as terrorism associated with the environment and animal rights. Of the 205 lives claimed in terrorist incidents within the United States between 1980 and 1999, more than 80% died in a single attack: the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995.

Tactical Equipment Evaluation
CRKT FTWS Field Knife
Allen Elishewitz is a well known name in knife design and he is the brains behind the Elishewitz F.T.W.S. now available through Columbia River Knife & Tool Company (CRKT). But, being the cynic that I am, I never take anything for granted (ok, rarely) and I like to abuse the heck out of something before I agree that it's of value. When CRKT sent me the FTWS to test I immediately started trying to figure out how I could test it to its limits. Since FTWS stands for "For Those Who Serve" I knew this knife was meant for uniformed personnel and I had to test it appropriately. It took what I had to throw at it and kept on coming.

"Patriots" by James Wesley, Rawles
Believe it or not, in America today, there are those who aren't a fan of President Obama. In fact, there are those who believe that his leadership, specifically where the economy is concerned, will soon be the downfall of this great nation. Have you ever wondered what would happen if the "nay-sayers" were actually proven correct? What will you do if hyper-inflation causes the price of everything to skyrocket out of affordability? Where and how will you live if government services collapse and the local grocery store is closed for months? In this fictional novel "Patriots: A Novel of Survival In The Coming Crisis", author James Wesley, Rawles interlaces survival instruction with an action-adventure tale that will have you turning pages way into the night.

The Importance of A Swimmers Nutrition
Swimming is one of the most challenging endurance sports on the planet. If you don't believe me get in a pool and swim a couple of laps as fast as you can. Are you tired yet? Make sure you swim close to the edge of the pool so you can latch on when you need to stop to gulp for air.
The amount of endurance it takes to be a good swimmer is why a swimmer's nutrition is so crucial to their strength and speed in the water. As a swimmer it is very important to pay attention to the type of nutrition that you are putting into your body. No matter how much you swim or train, without the proper diet and supplements, you will sink rather than swim.
